privative

Expressing absence grammatically

Privative describes something that denotes absence, lack, or removal.

In grammar, a privative prefix negates what follows: the *a-* in *atypical* or *un-* in *unhappy* marks the absence of the root quality.

More broadly, privative characterizes conditions defined by what's missing rather than what's present: Blindness is a privative condition—the lack of sight rather than the presence of something else.
