preverbal

Prior to language

Preverbal describes the stage before language develops, typically in infants and toddlers: preverbal communication, preverbal memories.

A preverbal child hasn't yet acquired speech.

The term also applies to experiences or knowledge that exist before or beyond words: a preverbal sense of security.

In linguistics, preverbal can mean positioned before a verb in a sentence.
