preconceptual

Prior to understanding

Preconceptual describes the stage before concepts are formed or applied.

In child development, it refers to early thinking that precedes abstract reasoning—a toddler's preconceptual understanding of the world.

More broadly, it describes intuitive or instinctive knowledge that exists prior to systematic thought: a preconceptual sense of danger, preconceptual awareness.
