predrilling

Making guide holes

Predrilling is drilling a hole before inserting a screw or nail, typically to prevent wood from splitting or to make fastening easier.

The hole is usually slightly smaller than the fastener: Predrilling is essential when working near the edge of a board.

The term applies in other contexts where a preliminary hole prepares for a larger operation.
