pre-chorus

Tension before release

A pre-chorus is the section of a song that comes between the verse and the chorus, building tension or energy before the main hook arrives.

It typically introduces new melodic or harmonic material that creates anticipation: The pre-chorus lifts the song right before the chorus drops.

Also called a lift or climb.
