postmistress
Female postal chief
A postmistress is a woman in charge of a post office.
The term was standard when such positions were commonly held by women in small towns, where the postmistress often knew everyone's business.
Now largely replaced by the gender-neutral postmaster: The postmistress sorted mail in the back room.
