postmistresses

Women managing mailrooms

Postmistresses is the plural of postmistress, a woman in charge of a post office.

The term was standard when such positions were commonly held by women in small towns: The postmistresses of rural communities often knew everyone's business.

Now largely replaced by the gender-neutral postmaster.
