post road
Historic mail highway
A post road is a road designated for carrying mail, historically connecting towns along routes where postal riders or coaches traveled.
In early America, post roads were maintained by government authority and often became major thoroughfares: The Boston Post Road connected New York to Boston.
The term is now mainly historical, surviving in road names.
