post-modern

Ironic, self-referential style

Post-modern describes art, architecture, literature, or thought that reacts against modernism's rigid principles and faith in progress.

Where modernism sought universal truths and clean forms, post-modernism embraces irony, pastiche, and skepticism toward grand narratives.

In architecture, it might mix classical columns with neon; in literature, self-aware narration that acknowledges its own artifice: The novel's post-modern structure kept undermining its own plot.

Often hyphenated, though postmodern is increasingly standard.
