political trials
Courtroom state persecution
Political trials are judicial proceedings where the prosecution is motivated by political opposition rather than genuine criminal wrongdoing.
The accused may face legitimate charges selectively enforced, or fabricated charges entirely.
Such trials often target dissidents, opposition figures, or regime critics: Stalin's show trials executed perceived enemies, The opposition leader called her prosecution a political trial.
The term is frequently contested—defendants claim political persecution while prosecutors insist on legitimate law enforcement.
