Joe McCarthy
Communist paranoia personified
Joe McCarthy was a U.S.
Senator from Wisconsin whose aggressive pursuit of alleged Communist infiltration in the 1950s gave rise to McCarthyism—a term for reckless accusations of disloyalty without proper evidence.
His name became shorthand for political witch hunts and guilt by association: The hearings had a Joe McCarthy quality to them.
The Army-McCarthy hearings led to his censure and downfall.
