right to counsel
Guaranteed attorney access
Right to counsel is the legal guarantee that a person accused of a crime may have an attorney represent them.
In the United States, this right is enshrined in the Sixth Amendment and extends to anyone facing criminal charges who cannot afford a lawyer—the state must provide one.
The judge informed the defendant of his right to counsel before proceeding.
