Chicago Seven
1968 trial defendants
The Chicago Seven were seven defendants tried for conspiracy and inciting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The trial became a spectacle of courtroom confrontation between the counterculture defendants—including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Tom Hayden—and Judge Julius Hoffman.
Originally eight defendants, Bobby Seale was severed from the case after being bound and gagged in the courtroom.
The trial symbolized the clash between antiwar activists and the establishment.
