pole-sitter
Mast-top endurance competitor
A pole-sitter is someone who sits atop a pole for extended periods, typically as an endurance stunt, publicity act, or form of protest.
The practice had a fad moment in the 1920s.
In motorsports, the pole-sitter is the driver who qualified fastest and starts the race from pole position—the front of the grid: The pole-sitter led for the first twenty laps.
