poison sumac

Wetland rash plant

Poison sumac is a shrub or small tree native to wetlands in eastern North America that causes severe allergic skin reactions on contact.

Like its relatives poison ivy and poison oak, it contains urushiol, an oily compound that triggers intense itching, blistering, and rash in most people who touch it.

The plant is identified by its smooth-edged leaves arranged in pairs along a central stem, with white berries in autumn.

I got a terrible case of poison sumac from clearing brush near the swamp.
