delayed reaction
Slow-dawning realization
A delayed reaction is a response that occurs noticeably after the stimulus that caused it.
Someone might laugh at a joke several seconds late, or realize they've been insulted only after walking away.
The term also applies to physical responses: I didn't feel the pain until an hour later—delayed reaction.
In medicine and psychology, it describes symptoms or emotional responses that emerge well after a triggering event.
