poetic structure
Stanza and rhyme
Poetic structure refers to the formal organization of a poem—how its elements are arranged.
This includes line length, stanza patterns, meter, rhyme scheme, and visual layout on the page.
A sonnet has fourteen lines in a specific rhyme scheme; a haiku has three lines of five, seven, and five syllables.
Free verse abandons fixed structure but still makes deliberate choices about where lines break and how white space functions.
The poetic structure reinforces the poem's meaning.
