ciphers

Encrypted message systems

Ciphers are codes—systems for converting messages into secret form, or the messages themselves.

A cipher can also be a key for decoding.

The word extends to anything without significance: a person who is a cipher lacks influence or personality, a mere zero.

To cipher is to do arithmetic, now old-fashioned: She sat ciphering in her notebook.
