plebes

First-year military cadets

Plebes is the plural of plebe, an informal term for a first-year student at a military academy such as West Point or Annapolis.

The word derives from plebeian, the common class in ancient Rome as distinguished from the patricians.

Outside military contexts, plebes sometimes appears as a casual or slightly dismissive term for ordinary people or newcomers to any institution.

The plebes had to complete basic training before joining upperclassmen.
