pitheads

Mine shaft openings

Pitheads are the surface areas and structures at the top of a mine shaft—the entrance where workers descend and ore comes up.

The term is primarily British, referring to colliery operations: He worked at the pithead for thirty years.

By extension, pithead can describe anything located at a mine's surface entrance: pithead baths, pithead equipment.
