coal face
Seam extraction point
The coal face is the exposed surface of coal at the working end of a mine, where extraction actually happens.
British English extends it figuratively to mean the place where real work gets done, as opposed to offices and boardrooms: nurses at the coal face of healthcare, teachers at the coal face.
The American equivalent is usually "front lines."
