pirogies

Eastern European dumplings

Pirogies are Eastern European dumplings—pockets of unleavened dough filled with mashed potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, meat, or fruit, then boiled and often pan-fried in butter.

Also spelled pierogies, pierogi, or perogy.

The word is already plural in Polish, but English speakers commonly add -s: We're having pirogies for dinner.
