pilot holes

Screw-guiding small bores

Pilot holes are small holes drilled before inserting screws or driving larger holes.

The smaller diameter guides the screw and prevents the material—especially wood—from splitting: Always drill pilot holes when working near the edge of a board.

The pilot hole removes material so the screw threads can grip without forcing fibers apart.
