picture rails
Horizontal display strips
Picture rails are narrow moldings mounted horizontally along walls, typically near the ceiling, designed to hold hooks from which pictures hang.
They allow artwork to be displayed and rearranged without putting holes in walls.
Common in older homes, they've largely given way to direct wall mounting: The Victorian house still had its original picture rails.
