piccaninny
Piccaninny is a dated and offensive term for a Black child, used especially in the American South and British colonies during slavery and the Jim Crow era.
The word appeared in racist caricatures depicting Black children with exaggerated features: a 1905 postcard showing piccaninnies eating watermelon.
Now recognized as a slur, it survives mainly in historical documents and discussions of racist imagery.
