pericarps
Seed-enclosing layers
Pericarps is the plural of pericarp, the wall of a ripened fruit that develops from the ovary.
The pericarp is the fleshy part you eat in a peach or tomato, or the tough shell of a nut.
Botanists divide it into layers—the outer skin, middle flesh, and inner membrane surrounding the seeds.
