grape skin
Wine color source
The outer covering of a grape, the thin membrane that encases the flesh and juice.
Grape skins contain pigments that give red and purple wines their color, along with tannins that affect texture and flavor.
In winemaking, contact time between juice and skins—called maceration—determines a wine's depth: White wines are made by separating the juice from the skins early.
