cocoa pod
Bean-bearing husk
A cocoa pod is the large, ridged fruit of the cacao tree, typically football-shaped and six to twelve inches long.
The thick outer shell, ranging from yellow to deep red when ripe, contains pulp-covered seeds—cocoa beans—that are fermented, dried, and processed to make chocolate and cocoa powder.
Workers split open the cocoa pods with machetes.
