penny farthing

Big-wheeled cycle

A penny farthing is an early bicycle with a very large front wheel and a tiny rear wheel—the size disparity resembling a British penny beside a farthing coin.

The rider sat high above the front wheel, making mounting and dismounting precarious.

The design was common in the 1870s and 1880s before the modern "safety bicycle" replaced it.
