pennate

Having feather structure

Pennate describes something shaped like a feather, with parts arranged on opposite sides of a central axis.

The term appears most often in anatomy and biology: a pennate muscle has fibers attaching diagonally to a central tendon, like barbs on a feather shaft.

Pennate diatoms are single-celled algae with bilateral symmetry, distinguished from centric (radially symmetric) forms.
