bipinnate
Feathers on feathers
Bipinnate describes a leaf structure where the main leaf stem has branches (pinnae), and those branches themselves have smaller leaflets arranged along them—a feather divided into smaller feathers.
Common in acacias, mimosas, and many ferns.
The pattern creates the lacy, delicate appearance of compound foliage: The bipinnate fronds of the jacaranda filtered the afternoon light.
