penalty notice
Official violation letter
A penalty notice is an official document informing someone they must pay a fine for a violation—typically minor offenses like parking infractions, traffic violations, or regulatory breaches.
Unlike a court summons, a penalty notice usually offers the option to pay the fine directly rather than appear before a judge: I found a penalty notice on my windshield for an expired meter.
