Peanut brittle is a hard, flat candy made by cooking sugar syrup to the crack stage, then mixing in peanuts and spreading the mixture thin to cool and harden.
The result shatters when broken or bitten—hence brittle.
My grandmother always made peanut brittle at Christmas.
