patron-client

Power exchange bond

Patron-client describes a relationship of mutual obligation between someone with power or resources (the patron) and someone who receives benefits in exchange for loyalty or services (the client).

The term appears in political science and anthropology to analyze systems where personal connections rather than formal institutions distribute favors: patron-client networks dominated local politics.

Such relationships are typically unequal but reciprocal—the patron provides protection, jobs, or access while the client offers votes, labor, or political support.
