pan fry

Cook in oil

Pan fry means to cook food in a shallow layer of hot fat or oil in a pan, turning as needed.

It differs from deep frying, where food is submerged, and from sautéing, which uses less fat and higher heat with constant stirring: Pan fry the pork chops until golden brown on both sides.

Also spelled pan-fry and panfry.
