whitewashed house
Pale plastered residence
A whitewashed house has been painted with whitewash—a mixture of lime and water that produces a bright white finish.
The technique is traditional in Mediterranean, Latin American, and coastal regions, where the reflective surface helps keep interiors cool: The village was full of whitewashed houses with blue shutters.
The term is purely descriptive, referring to the coating method rather than architectural style.
