fritillary
Spotted orange butterfly
Fritillary names two unrelated things that share a checkered pattern.
The fritillary flower is a spring-blooming bulb with drooping bell-shaped blossoms marked by a checkerboard pattern: The snake's head fritillary naturalized in the meadow.
Fritillary butterflies are a large group with orange-and-black checkered wings, common across North America and Europe.
