paging system
Building-wide voice broadcast
A paging system is a communication network for sending short messages to portable receivers called pagers or beepers.
Before cell phones became ubiquitous, doctors, emergency responders, and on-call workers carried pagers to receive alerts: The hospital's paging system notified surgeons of incoming trauma cases.
The term also refers to public address systems in buildings: A voice came over the paging system announcing the gate change.
