packboards

Load-bearing back frames

Packboards are rigid frames, typically made of wood or aluminum, worn on the back to carry heavy loads.

Unlike soft backpacks, the flat board distributes weight across the shoulders and hips while keeping cargo away from the body.

They're used in hunting, forestry, and backcountry work where hauling awkward loads is necessary: He strapped the elk quarters to his packboard.
