overwetting

Too much moisture

Overwetting is applying too much liquid to a surface, material, or substance.

The term appears most often in technical contexts—carpet cleaning, painting, agriculture, inkjet printing—where excess moisture causes problems like warping, bleeding, or slow drying: Overwetting the carpet can damage the backing and promote mold growth.
