overgrip

Handle cushion layer

An overgrip is a thin, cushioned tape wrapped around the handle of a racket or club to improve grip, absorb sweat, and provide comfort.

Tennis, badminton, and squash players commonly apply overgrips over the original grip, replacing them frequently as they wear out.

The term also describes the act of gripping too tightly, which can reduce control and cause fatigue: She was overgripping the club, which threw off her swing.
