overcranking

High-speed film capture

Overcranking is a filmmaking technique where the camera records at a higher frame rate than normal playback speed, producing slow-motion footage when projected.

The term comes from early cinema, when cameras were hand-cranked—turning faster captured more frames per second.

The opposite technique, undercranking, creates sped-up motion.

The director used overcranking to capture the bullet shattering the glass in exquisite detail.
