off-set
Compensate for something
Off-set is a less common hyphenated spelling of offset, used as both noun and verb.
As a noun, an offset is something that counterbalances or compensates for something else: The tax increase was an off-set to rising deficits.
It also refers to a method of printing where ink transfers from a plate to a rubber surface before reaching paper.
As a verb, to off-set means to counterbalance or compensate: Higher wages off-set the increased cost of living.
The unhyphenated offset is now standard in most contexts.
