nonliving

Lacking vital signs

Nonliving describes things that lack the characteristics of life—growth, reproduction, metabolism, response to stimuli.

Rocks, water, and machines are nonliving.

The term appears most often in scientific contexts distinguishing organisms from their environment: nonliving matter, nonliving components of an ecosystem.

Unlike *dead*, nonliving implies the thing was never alive to begin with.
