nitinol
Shape-remembering alloy
Nitinol is a metal alloy of nickel and titanium known for two unusual properties: shape memory and superelasticity.
A nitinol wire bent out of shape will return to its original form when heated.
At certain temperatures, it can be stretched or deformed dramatically and spring back without permanent damage.
These properties make nitinol valuable in medical devices like stents and orthodontic wires, as well as in eyeglass frames and other applications where flexibility and recovery matter.
