intermetallic
Ordered metallic crystal
Intermetallic describes compounds or alloys formed between two or more metals that have a distinct crystal structure and fixed composition, unlike ordinary alloys where metals mix more freely.
These materials often have properties—hardness, heat resistance, brittleness—that differ markedly from their component metals: intermetallic compounds in jet engine turbines, the intermetallic layer that forms during soldering.
