mujahed

Islamic resistance fighter

A mujahed is a person engaged in jihad—someone fighting in defense of Islam or Muslim lands.

The term gained prominence during the Soviet-Afghan War, when mujahedeen (the Arabic plural) fought Soviet forces with Western backing.

The word carries heroic connotations in Muslim contexts but acquired sinister overtones in Western usage after some fighters turned to terrorism.

Also spelled mujahid; plural mujahedeen or mujahideen.
