morning line
Pre-race betting forecast
A morning line is the initial odds posted on horses before a race, set by the track handicapper rather than by actual betting.
Published in racing programs, it represents an educated guess about how the public will wager: The morning line had her at 5-to-1, but she went off at 3-to-1.
The term extends to any early prediction or preliminary assessment of chances.
