ridge-runner
Backwoods whiskey maker
A ridge-runner is someone who lives in or roams the mountainous backcountry, particularly the Appalachian ridges.
The term carries connotations of rural poverty, isolation, and self-reliance—often used dismissively by outsiders to characterize mountain folk as backward or uncivilized: Those ridge-runners don't trust anyone from town.
It can also simply describe someone who knows the high country intimately.
