monopsony
Single purchaser dominance
A monopsony is a market condition where there is only one buyer for a product or service, giving that buyer disproportionate power over sellers.
The term mirrors monopoly (one seller) but from the buyer's side.
A classic example is a company town where one employer sets wages because workers have nowhere else to go: Amazon's dominance in book retail creates near-monopsony conditions for publishers.
